What is insured?
Depending on the insurer and policy selected, pet health insurance covers the cost of medically necessary treatment and surgery, including pre- and post-operative care. Benefits are based on the German veterinary fee schedule (GOT). The multiple of the listed rate that is reimbursed varies by policy. Some policies also include benefits for vaccinations, castration or sterilisation, sometimes as a fixed allowance. Certain policies may set an overall annual benefit limit or require an excess.

Which risks and losses can be insured?
Procedures performed for cosmetic reasons are generally excluded. Chemical castration and similar procedures are also usually excluded. Some providers do not cover a defined catalogue of specific illnesses.

The premium is generally based on the animal’s species or breed, its age and the level of cover required, for example surgery costs only.

Animal owner’s liability
Dogs, horses and cats are generally considered companion animals rather than working animals. Because private liability insurance cannot cover the greater risk posed by dogs and horses, owners should take out dedicated animal owner’s liability insurance. Only this protects you against third-party claims for damage caused by your animal.
Legal expenses insurance
